Jin Sakai returns as a playable character in Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted, a roguelike mode built around challenging, replayable combat. The development team says bringing him back meant more than adding a familiar face: it required adapting his fighting style and presentation to Yōtei while retaining the character’s defining traits.

Parker Hamilton, head of systems design, said the team initially prototyped Most Wanted with other characters. Jin seemed like a natural fit, but the developers wanted to deliver an authentic experience rather than a partial version of the character. The team ultimately took on the work of restoring his abilities, including his stances and sticky bombs, and adjusting his mechanics for the new mode.

More than 60 of Jin’s attack animations were reassigned to the new character skeleton, revised and rebalanced for Ghost of Yōtei’s combat system. Animator Mark Wheeler also created custom lateral movement animations for each of Jin’s stances. His perks were designed to reflect his familiar approach, including bonuses that reward perfectly timed deflections and encourage players to use his distinctive mix of sword techniques and unconventional attacks.

The animation team also brought back Jin’s recognizable idle actions. One appears in the Most Wanted character-selection menu: an animation of Jin holding a bird, inspired by a moment in Ghost of Tsushima when he first retrieves the Storm Blade.

The character model received visual updates to match Yōtei’s level of detail without changing the design players remember. Artist Nate Ramsey said the team used Jin’s original textures as a reference while refining his armor’s metal, leather and fabric, as well as details such as his skin, facial hair and scar.

The audio team revisited several of Jin’s signature attacks, including Heavenly Strike, Dance of Wrath and Ghost Stance. It also reworked the movement sounds associated with his Ghost armor to fit Yōtei’s animation audio system. Jin’s theme was recorded in a new version with Justin Johnson on lap steel guitar, and Daisuke Tsuji returned to voice the character.

The developers describe the work as an effort to honor Jin while applying the artistic and technical improvements made since Ghost of Tsushima. They say the result brings his familiar look, combat style and gestures into Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted.
