Jin Sakai returns as a playable character in Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted, and the development team says bringing him back required more than adding a familiar face. In a behind-the-scenes account, staff described the work involved in adapting his combat, animations, character model and audio to the newer game.
Most Wanted was designed as a replayable, class-based mode focused on combat challenges and mastery. The team initially tested the format with other characters, then decided Jin would be a strong fit—but only if they could recreate the full experience of playing as him. That meant accounting for his stances and signature sticky bomb, alongside the changes between Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei’s combat systems.
Jin’s more than 60 attack animations, many with bespoke finishers, were adapted to the new character rig and rebalanced. The team also created stance-specific strafe animations to support Yōtei’s Focus Attack system. His perks were designed to reinforce his established fighting style: one, Rattling Parry, increases stagger damage after successful parries, while other perks encourage Perfect Parries. His Stone Stance and Quickfire abilities also retain a place in his mix of formal swordsmanship and more improvised tactics.
The animation team restored Jin’s combat moves as well as his idle actions. His character-selection animation draws inspiration from the scene in Ghost of Tsushima in which he first recovers the storm blade, while a rarely seen bird-hold idle was added to the Most Wanted menu.
Artists updated Jin’s armor and appearance to match Yōtei’s visual fidelity without losing the details players associate with his original design. They used the earlier textures as a base, refining materials and adding subtle wear to the armor. His skin, facial hair and scar were also adjusted, with the team balancing greater detail against the need to keep him recognizable.
The audio work included revisiting signature attacks such as Heavenly Slash, Dance of Wrath and Ghost Stance, along with a new recording of Jin’s musical theme featuring Justin Johnson on lap steel guitar. His movement sounds were rebuilt to work with Yōtei’s updated animation system. Daisuke Tsuji also returned to voice Jin, recording confrontations with members of the Yōtei Six; the sessions additionally led to some of Jin’s lines being included in the main game.
The post notes that playing Most Wanted requires an internet connection, a PlayStation account and patch version 2.0 or later.
