Final Fantasy Resonance has reportedly been well received by fans, making the story behind its development particularly notable. According to producer Keisuke Nakashima, Square Enix leadership initially opposed the direction ultimately taken by the project.
The RPG is based on Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the mobile gacha game that shut down in 2024. Rather than transferring the discontinued title directly, the development team reworked its systems to fit the structure and gameplay expected from a traditional Final Fantasy adventure.
That process involved what was effectively an extensive remake of Exvius. The finished game serves as a callback to the series' classic design, with its gameplay and structure moving away from the original mobile format.
Nakashima said his superiors had wanted a straightforward port of Brave Exvius instead of the broader adaptation that became Final Fantasy Resonance. The final result, however, reflects the development team's decision to substantially reshape the source material.
