Sony is encouraging PS5 owners in the US who are no longer using their consoles to trade them in for cash through Back Market, a third-party service. The offer is worth up to $400 for a standard PS5 with two DualSense controllers, with the final amount depending on the condition of the equipment.

The promotion is being shared through notifications sent to PS5 players. Microsoft recently sent a similar message to Xbox Series X|S customers, inviting them to trade in consoles they are not playing.

The article suggests that moving unused consoles back into circulation could bring new customers into each company’s ecosystem. Someone buying a second-hand PS5, for example, might also purchase games through the PlayStation Store or subscribe to PS Plus. It also notes that the offer comes at a time when the price of new consoles has risen and PS5 Pro stock has been difficult to find, while standard PS5 systems may still be readily available.
