Bungie has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated unvaulting of legacy Destiny 2 content will not be completed until early 2028. In a recent community update, the studio detailed its current progress, noting that it is still in the pre-production phase for this massive undertaking. The developer expects to remain in this preparatory stage until January or February of next year before transitioning into full production.

Once full production begins, Bungie estimates it will take approximately 12 months to finish the work, setting a completion date at the start of 2028. "It's a lot of content," the studio explained regarding the scale of the project. The initial phase of the unvaulting is planned to include campaigns from Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind, alongside their associated strikes, raids, raid lairs, and a Menagerie Activity featuring reprised rewards.

Beyond these primary targets, Bungie has listed several "stretch goals" it intends to consider after the main content is restored. These potential additions include free roam destinations, seasonal activities, updates for raid and raid lair weapons, and new PvP maps. The developer stated that it is currently on track to meet this timeline.

While players wait for the unvaulting process, Bungie teased several other initiatives. This includes a "Destiny 2 celebration" focused on the community, with more details expected in February 2027. The studio also mentioned a concept called "Destiny Legacy," which aims to serve the whole experience to players; some fans speculate this could resemble a classic version of the game similar to World of Warcraft Classic. Additionally, a redacted event was hinted at with the simple message, "We're back."

The update emphasized Bungie's commitment to regaining the trust of its fanbase by learning from past mistakes and unifying the community. The studio highlighted that the majority of its team consists of legacy Destiny members who believe that evolving Marathon into a sustainable future is crucial. As the team heads toward December and March updates for Marathon, they described this period as formative for determining the shape of their future.
